Review of Tesla Punk 85W. Steam not dead

Today we will talk not about a new, but an interesting box mod from Teslacig, made in the style of “steampunk” – Tesla Punk 85W.

Today’s production of devices is experiencing a certain degree of stagnation, when everything that could be thought up, it would seem, has long been done and implemented. Do you want an inconspicuous device? Choose from e-cigs and Pod systems. Do you want the device to work for a long time, give out three hundred watts of power and at the same time not be afraid of the prospect of carrying a half-kilo brick in your pocket? Yes, please! Do you need a device that is not afraid of moisture and falls? And here there are options. Perhaps, today, all that manufacturers can compete with each other in is various decorations and the appearance of devices. And it is these devices that stand apart from functional, but nondescript boxes. Attracting the buyer precisely with their exterior. Teslacig cannot boast of the wide distribution of its products, but what the company consistently succeeds in is attracting the attention of vapers by experimenting with devices. The manufacturer has already released more than one device designed in the “steampunk” style, the Tesla Nano can be called especially successful. And in addition to the single-battery version of the box mod considered in this review, there is also Tesla Punk 220W, an almost complete copy of the device, but designed to operate on two 18650 batteries.

The device came into my hands in a white box with a schematic image of the box and voluminous gears on the front side. buy e-liquids australia On the back you can find information about the characteristics of the mod, a description of the contents, a scattering of pictograms and two stickers: one has a mark on the color (I have Gun Metal), the second, with a hologram, a verification code under an erasable strip, which can be checked on the manufacturer’s website.

Inside, you will find a somewhat standard, i.e. practically “nothing” kit, consisting of the device itself and a small cable in a plastic braid for charging. The instructions include several translations, including “Russian”. It is worth reading the manual at least so that during a long puff you are not scared by the inscription “!!Long waffles!!” In general, there are enough funny moments here. I would not advise following the advice from the instructions “…Choose compatible 18650 batteries and charge them with a current of 35 A or higher”.

Appearance and design of the Tesla Punk 85W Box Mod

The Tesla Punk 85W box mod pleases, first of all, with its appearance, which will not leave indifferent any fan of relief and low-functional elements on the case. Useless, but beautiful! The main part of the box body resembles aged metal with rough grinding. But in fact, the surface is glossy, covered with a protective varnish and collects noticeable fingerprints. The side walls are covered with plastic panels, under which various “gears/tubes/resistors/mesh” are visible. And the entire case, although it is an angular “brick”, but with cut edges, therefore it fits very well and tenaciously in the palm of the hand. The weight of the device for such a small one, frankly speaking, is quite impressive, evoking if not associations with a steam engine in the hand, then the impression of a reliable design. The only disappointing thing is the poorly fixed display, which noticeably “walks” under the fingers. It is this that negates the whole feeling of the device’s solidity.

To the left of the screen, under a transparent panel, there is a decorative one with the manufacturer’s logo at the top, the name of the device at the bottom and a mesh on the right side. So, the inner panel is installed inside not parallel to the outer one, but at a slight angle, the right part is slightly “tilted”. This is probably how it should be (judging by the numerous images on the Internet), but this layout is a bit confusing and creates the impression of a sloppy assembly. The transparent parts seem thick, but bend a little when pressed. It is quite difficult to say how the plastic will behave when dropped. Out of the box, both panels are covered with protective films.

The choice of colors is quite in keeping with the steampunk style: Gun Metal (as in this review), Brass, Antique Copper and a cheerful Rainbow.

Impressions

Fitting dotRDA24 (24 mm) on Tesla Punk 85WThe Tesla Punk 85W box mod pleased with both its functionality and trouble-free operation. The Fire triggers without a noticeable delay (it will only take some time to wake up from standby mode), there were no glitches or freezes for several days of operation. Support for resistance from 0.08 Ohm, which for some reason the manufacturer is embarrassed to indicate in the official specification, is not yet 0.05 Ohm, but still gives more freedom to use low resistances. Moreover, the current output of 30 A just allows you to swing such a winding. The protruding plastic panels can hardly be attributed to the negative aspects. Although their presence increases the chance of crumbling the device when dropped, the main task is a decorative function. If I had to choose between a relief with the same gears that gets clogged with dirt and the design offered by Teslacig, I would still choose transparent plastic. Even if it gets dirty (by the way, not very noticeable compared to the case) and scratched, we would be deprived of the backlight! It’s good that you can simply turn it off and forget about it like a bad dream. Yes, the device is larger (and heavier) than many of its peers, but if you need a stealth setup, then this is definitely not about the massive Punk 85W with built-in illumination (by the way, there is even a mode reminiscent of a police chandelier!). Although not the main, but an important task of the box is to please the owner with its appearance. And the included functionality is completely consistent with any other modern device. The only complaint about the assembly is the display, which is not fixed inside, it moves noticeably under the fingers. Most likely, it is connected to the board with a cable, which can simply break over time. However, the screen is located quite deep in the case, and I noticed this jamb completely by accident. I can’t say anything bad about the cover, it is just different, and it does its job perfectly. Liked:

Steampunk appearance

Build quality and convenient case

Fast response

Support resistance from 0.08 Ohm

Excellent functionality and board operation

Atomizer seating ∅25 mm

Good charging current

Passtrough mode

Disliked:

Screen wobbles
