Review of Ovanty VEGA 200W MOD
In this review, I will tell you about a solid and well-protected mod from a young company OVANTY called VEGA, a mod that can and should be charged wirelessly.
For more than a year now, it has been obvious that the vaping industry has left the peak of its development behind; there has been both market saturation and a general decline in popularity. However, new and ambitious companies continue to appear without fear of competition with old-timers, they come up with something new and rethink the old. The Chinese company OVANTY (full name Dongguan Ovanty Electronic Technology Co., Ltd.) is an absolute newcomer. Since its foundation in 2017, only two devices have been presented: a tank on unserviced evaporators Stinger Tank and the hero of today’s review, the VEGA 200W mod.
VEGA 200W MOD packaging
VEGA 200W MOD is sold in a small but weighty box, on the front side of which there is an appearance of the device, on the back side there is a complete set, specification, color, serial number, warnings and a scattering of certificate icons. buy vape kits australia The sides contain information about the manufacturer and a list of the main features of the mod.
Under the dust jacket with inscriptions, you will find a simple black box without a lid lock, of all the decorations and inscriptions on it there is only the logo of the manufacturer, the OVANTY company.
What’s in the box
Under the lid there will be a translucent (mica) tab with the name of the mod and the Internet address of the manufacturer, and under it, in a plastic bed, there will be the mod itself.
Under the plastic you can find another cardboard box, which will contain: a docking station, a USB-microUSB cable in a fabric braid, instructions in Chinese and English, a warranty card and a quality control certificate. I warn you right away that it will be almost impossible to understand how the mod works without instructions, as the designers have deviated so much from generally accepted standards.
VEGA 200W MOD. Design
At first glance, the Vega 200W MOD seems a bit ridiculous and plastic-Chinese, but once you pick it up, all the negativity instantly disappears, and the mod itself turns out to be very convenient, well-assembled, weighty (it is entirely metal) and “grippy”. The layout of the mod and its controls are somewhat discouraging at first glance, but then you get used to them, and the rounded combs on both sides lie surprisingly well in your hand. The designers from OVANTY abandoned the rectangular shape and rounded (without fanaticism) almost everything they could, made as many as 4 control buttons and protected the screen with massive plastic glass.
Traditionally, I will start examining the device from its top. Here is a large and massive steel platform with a diameter of 27 millimeters for the evaporators. It is decorated with an abstract pattern, which should reduce the chance of the evaporators sticking. In the center of the platform (and the mod itself) is a spring-loaded and moisture-proof 510 connector with a brass positive pin.
At the top of the mod, on the axis of symmetry of the device, there is a Fire button in the form of a deformed hexagon. The tactile click when pressed is clear, the button itself does not make noise when shaking and does not rattle when lightly touched. It is convenient to press it only with the side surface of the thumb, this is due to both its location and the peculiarities of the grip of the mod itself.
During the first day, I constantly caught myself thinking that it would be more convenient to place the Fire button on one of the side panels, and even better if the entire side panel could be pressed entirely.
Under the Fire button is a relatively large and colorful screen, covered with a thick glass insert, which, according to the manufacturer, increases its protection. In bright sunlight, the screen surprisingly remains quite readable, the information on it is even better visible than on some models of mobile phones.
Even lower are three control buttons and a charging socket. There are no complaints about the buttons, but it was quite a shame to see a microUSB connector in 2018. It’s time to install USB Type C.
The bottom edge of the device is notable for three contacts for removing current from the docking station and the absence of any inscriptions.
The complete docking station is not remarkable in any way, just a piece of plastic with a recess and contacts on the upper edge and a microUSB connector on one of the sides. The information on the bottom duplicates the indicator of the maximum voltage (5 Volts) and current (2 Amperes) with which the device can be charged.
During use, it turned out that such a charging system is extremely convenient, especially if the mod is used mainly indoors (at home or at work). Take it, vape, set it up. Theoretically, the batteries in the VEGA mod can be left in place and changed about once a year.
The back side of the device is entirely given over to the lid, which, like the mod itself, is made of metal and is held on by only two fairly large magnets, but fits perfectly, does not rattle or fidget even with intense attempts to move it from its place.
The back side of the lid is equipped with a reminder sticker with information about the need to use batteries only in whole and undamaged insulation.
VEGA 200W MOD. Interface and settings
Immediately after unpacking, I wanted to study the device menu and suddenly realized that I could not enter it – multiple presses of various buttons did not lead to anything. I had to look at the instructions and, as it turned out, not in vain, the control in VEGA 200W MOD completely ignores generally accepted standards and is arranged in a very peculiar way. Starting with the fact that after installing the batteries, the device will show the manufacturer’s logo and turn off. You will have to forcibly turn it on by pressing the Fire button five times.
And pressing it three times locks and unlocks the device.
To enter the menu, you need to hold down the middle control key for two seconds. You can move through the items using the up and down buttons, select an item with the central key, go up a level – long press on the central key (yes, Fire is not used here at all).
The following items can be found in the menu:
Turn off the mod (just like that, the first item);
Select a language;
Setting the date and time (the mod can work as a clock when using the docking station, the time settings will not be lost, the batteries are not removed);
Selecting a font;
Selecting a design theme (you can even draw your own, but more on that below);
Setting up LED backlighting (again, surprise, judging by its appearance, it doesn’t seem to be there);
Setting up screen brightness;
Setting up automatic shutdown time;
Selecting a menu style;
Resetting to factory settings;
Updating firmware;
Puff counter;
Setting up the temperature coefficient for thermal control;
Exiting the menu
VEGA 200W MOD. Personal impressions
What I liked
Suddenly convenient
Steel case without plastic elements
Color screen
Simple control (in beginner mode)
Nothing rattles or wobbles
Heavy weight (yes, for me this is a plus)
Not bad paint
Docking station
Interface customization
Works from 0.08 Ohm
Can be charged with 2A current
What is simply good
Wide platform for atomizers
Expert mode, where all settings except simple power adjustment have been moved
There are a bunch of all sorts of protections on the board
Not eye-catching LED backlight
There is a clock
Firmware without unnecessary programs and restoration to factory settings in case of “bricked”
What could be better
The ribs on the sides protrude too much
I would like the Fire button under one of the side panels or at least on the side panel.
Overdid it with the control in expert mode
Quick Charge
Total:
Technically and practically, the mod is made perfectly, excellently painted metal, a lot of attention to detail, perfect fit of the battery compartment cover, etc. There are some minor complaints about the design and the implementation of the expert mode, but otherwise everything is very very good! Plus, if not innovative, then at least previously unseen in other mods: docking station, firmware of the mod from the menu of the mod itself, interface settings and wallpaper replacement. Be sure to pay attention to it if (or when) it reaches your vape shops and online stores.
